While urban sprawl is a recent and rapid phenomenon in Cambodia, artist Lim Sokchanlina’s series Wrapped Futures II (2011) imagines the extreme. Employing a ubiquitous symbol of development – the green mesh construction tarpaulin – Lim denotes areas in anonymous rural landscapes, where 80% of the population live traditional low-tech agrarian lives, to suggest that nothing is safe from developers. In his words, development “alters a place’s history or memory in favor of the strict belief that the future is the only concern.”
